Περίληψη

The impact of acoustic pressure waves on multicomponentnonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) ganglia dissolution inwater saturated columns packed with glass beads wasinvestigated. Laboratory data from dissolution experimentswith two and three component NAPL mixtures suggestedthat acoustic waves significantly enhance ganglia dissolutiondue to the imposed oscillatory interstitial water velocity. The dissolution enhancement was shown to be directlyproportional to the acoustic wave frequency. Furthermore,it was demonstrated that the greatest dissolutionenhancement in the presence of acoustic waves isassociated with the component of the NAPL mixture havingthe smallest equilibrium aqueous solubility. Finally, square shaped acoustic waves were shown to lead togreater NAPL dissolution enhancement compared tosinusoidal and triangular acoustic waves. The results ofthis study suggested that aquifer remediation using acousticwaves is a promising method particularly for aquiferscontaminated with NAPLs containing components withvery low equilibrium aqueous solubilities.
